Randy Komisar is a venture capitalist with decades of startup experience. He is the author of the best-selling book The Monk and the Riddle, about the heart and soul of entrepreneurship, as well as numerous articles on leadership and startups. He is also the co-author of Getting to Plan B, on managing innovation, and I F**king Love that Company, on building consumer brands. He taught entrepreneurship at Stanford University and is a frequent lecturer at universities, as well as a regular keynote speaker on entrepreneurship, innovation and leadership. He joined Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers in 2005 to focus on early stage ventures. Prior to that he created the role of “Virtual CEO” to partner with entrepreneurs to help them and their businesses achieve their potential, serving as Virtual CEO for such startups as WebTV and GlobalGiving. He was a co-founder of Claris Corp., and served as CEO for LucasArts Entertainment and Crystal Dynamics. Randy was a founding director of TiVo and Nest. He was the CFO of GO Corp. and Senior Counsel for Apple, following a private practice in technology law. He has also served on dozens of private and public company boards and advises such organizations as Roadtrip Nation and the Orrick Women’s Leadership Board.

Trae Vassallo is a Co-Founder and Managing Director of Defy, an early stage venture capital firm. She is an engineer, an entrepreneur, and an investor, and her passion is collaborating with the world’s best entrepreneurs. In addition to Defy, Trae is on the board of directors at Telstra, an international telecommunications company. Trae recently co-authored the study “Elephant in the Valley” to help highlight the underlying data around the experiences of women in technology. She was previously a General Partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. Over her 14-year investing career, Trae invested in number of leading companies including eero, Nest Labs, Dropcam, Aggregate Knowledge and Opower. A “design thinker” and engineer at heart, Trae thrives at the intersection of great products and big markets.

Before joining KPCB, Trae was a Co-Founder of Good Technology, a KPCB portfolio company that provides end-to-end wireless email services to the enterprise. Trae began her career at IDEO, where she developed ground-breaking products for companies including Palm and Dell. Trae holds 13 patents across a broad array of technologies and disciplines.

Trae earned a Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in mechanical engineering with honors from Stanford University and an M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Trae participated on the Trust of the Stanford Business School and as an advisor to the Mechanical Engineering Department at Stanford. In addition to working with inspiring entrepreneurs, Trae is passionate about empowering women in technology and adventuring with her husband, Steve, and three children.
