Hosts Peter Cappelli and Dan O’Meara are joined by Kerwin Charles (Edwin A. and Betty L. Bergman Professor, Harris School, University of Chicago), Rebecca Ray PhD (Executive Vice President of the Knowledge Organization, The Conference Board), and Matt Charney (Executive Editor and Head of Content, Recruiting Daily) on the Thursday, August 30, 2018 edition of In the Workplace.
Kerwin Charles is the Edwin A. and Betty L. Bergman Distinguished Service Professor and former interim Dean at the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy.
His research focuses on a range of questions in labor and applied microeconomics. The topics he has studied include racial and gender discrimination in the labor market; the propagation of wealth and earnings across different generations within a family; the effects of sectoral shocks in the economy on college attainment, occupational choice, and labor market participation; how adverse health shocks affect family stability and labor supply; and differences in visible consumption across different racial and ethnic groups.
He holds a master’s degree and a doctorate from Cornell University, and joined the University of Chicago in 2005 after teaching economics and public policy at the University of Michigan. In addition to his appointment at the University of Chicago, he is a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and serves on the Board of Trustees for NORC.
Rebecca Ray is the Executive Vice President of the Knowledge Organization at The Conference Board. She is a co-author of The Conference Board’s 2017 Job Satisfaction survey. She leads the global Human Capital practice and has oversight of the research planning and dissemination process for all three practices areas (Corporate Leadership, Economy & Business Environment, and Human Capital) and is responsible for the research agenda. Ray is the co-author of numerous publications with a focus on leadership development. She has taught at Oxford and New York Universities and led a consulting practice for many years, offering leadership assessment and development services to Fortune 500 companies and top-tier professional services firms.
