It was the compassionate, patient-centered approach to fighting cancer that attracted Dr. Arturo Loaiza-Bonilla to Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA). He joined CTCA® in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in May 2017, and is Vice Chair of CTCA’s Department of Medical Oncology. He also serves as the hospital’s Chief of Medical Oncology and Medical Director of Research.

“At CTCA, our research department works closely with the pharmaceutical and diagnostic industries. This collaboration helps us deliver innovative technologies and novel treatment options to our patients,” says Dr. Loaiza-Bonilla. “Our clinical trials emphasize new targeted therapies, diagnostics, molecules and immunotherapy. Whenever possible, we incorporate these breakthroughs and technologies into treatment plans, tailored to each patient and their specific tumor type. This is personalized precision cancer treatment, the next dimension of cancer care.”

Board certified in medical oncology as well as hematology, Dr. Loaiza-Bonilla is dedicated to comprehensive care for patients suffering from gastrointestinal malignancies, such as colon, esophagus, gastric, liver, pancreas and neuroendocrine tumors.

Dr. Loaiza-Bonilla earned a medical degree from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogotá, Colombia. Following medical school, he completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Harbor Hospital Center, Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Loaiza-Bonilla also completed a fellowship in hematology and oncology from the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine in Miami, Florida.

Prior to joining CTCA, Dr. Loaiza-Bonilla was an assistant professor of clinical medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. During this time, he completed his master’s degree in medical education at the same university.

Dr. Loaiza-Bonilla has been published in several medical journals and oncology publications. He is also a reviewer and counselor for several journals, special interest groups, panels and academic competitions. He has also served as principal investigator and co-investigator for many large oncology clinical trials. Dr. Loaiza-Bonilla has been a member and held leadership positions for several medical organizations. These include the Pennsylvania Society of Oncology and Hematology, American Society of Hematology, American Society of Clinical Oncology and American Association of Cancer Research.

In addition to his work, Dr. Loaiza-Bonilla is passionate about music. He was a tenor singing classical and baroque chorale music, including a long tenure at the Handel Choir of Baltimore. Outside CTCA, Dr. Loaiza-Bonilla enjoys golfing, skiing or reading. He and his spouse, a neurologist, enjoy time together traveling, exploring and dining.
