Barbara Waxman

Author of "The Middlescence Manifesto: Igniting the Passion of Midlife"

Barbara Waxman has rebranded our conception of “middle age,” and in so doing helped us to seize years that so many consider inherently “less valuable” than earlier years of our lives. Barbara is a foremost gerontologist, leadership coach, and speaker, and her book “The Middlescence Manifesto: Igniting the Passion of Midlife” teaches readers how to reframe their conception of life trajectories, middle-age, and limitations.

As an excerpt from the book states: “Many of us have heard statistics that we’re living longer, but have assumed that we’ve added those additional years at the end of life, when we’re “old.” That’s simply not true. Thanks to advances in sanitation, medicine, and nutrition, we’ve added meaningful decades to the middle of life, not the end. We’ve added more years of living, not dying” (Middlescence Manifesto).

We need to reframe our thinking to accept the fact that when we are forty or fifty years old, we have a whole second half (at least!) of life waiting for us, and furthermore, these are years in which we can continue to grow,

learn and achieve as dynamically as we did during the first. Between ages 45 and 65 we should be embracing life at the peak and taking advantage of our hard-earned wisdom. “In Middlescence, we encounter another major change [as in adolescence], but this time we can marshal the wisdom and wherewithal to take full advantage of the promise of this life stage.”

Barbara blogs for Huff/Post 50, NextAvenue,, and VibrantNation. Her work has been featured in, Fortune, Newsday, U.S. News & World Report, AARP The Magazine, and more.

“Her ability to inspire others with compassion, honesty and a light heart, while incorporating cutting edge leadership principles, distinguishes Barbara’s work.”

Barbara is certified by both the International Coach Federation and The Hudson Institute. She holds a Masters Degrees in Both Administration and Gerontology and is a Wexner Heritage Foundation Fellow.
